Peace as a Missionary Vocation: an Urgent Call in a Wounded World
At the beginning of each year, the World Day of Peace invites humanity to pause and reflect deeply on the reality we live in. In his message for January 1st, 2026, Pope Leo XIV calls Christians to rediscover peace not as an abstract idea, but as a missionary vocation, capable of entering the wounds of the world with compassion and hope.
Our world is marked by war, injustice, and structural violence. The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one among many examples of peoples suffering from armed conflict, exploitation, and forced displacement. In such a context, peace may seem distant, yet it becomes an urgent responsibility.
Pope Leo XIV reminds us that the peace of Christ begins with a disarmament of the heart—an inner conversion that frees us from fear, hatred, and indifference. Inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, Christians are called to live simplicity, dialogue, and universal fraternity.
Peace is not only a gift to be received; it is also a mission entrusted to us. Every Christian community is called to be a prophetic sign of reconciliation, transforming daily environments into places of dialogue, welcome, and solidarity, especially toward the poor, migrants, and those who suffer loneliness.
Within the context of the Jubilee of Hope, peace becomes a transformative journey that begins in the heart and reaches out to the world. Building peace is a daily commitment that invites us to become people of reconciliation, witnesses of hope, and builders of fraternity.
